about the project:
The “GYP all Stars” project involves musicians, singers, producers,
sound engineers and artists from different countries, genres and cultural backgrounds.

All the artists meet in a relaxed and free environment where music is the daily activity. For Jamaicans it’s the way they created music from the beginnings of Ska to present day.
This project is a mirror of what happened in Jamaica 40 years ago, in the old days they used a little tape recorder as a creative tool, before they went to record in the studio. Today we are able to record with mobility. Technology has enabled us to capture the creative process anywhere with no limitations.

The older generation of Jamaican musicians and artists are coming together again, collaborating with young

EARL CHINNA SMITH

KIDDUS I

BOB ANDY

Bob emerged as a solo star in 1966 with the smash hit "I've Got to Go Back Home", a song that has become a much-loved anthem for Jamaicans. He was one of Studio One’s leading lights. In 1970, international recognition came when Bob and Marcia Griffiths recorded Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black", which sold 1/2 million in the UK and Europe, and still receives frequent airplay today, assuming once again his role of Jamaican music pioneer. For the last 25 years he was playing around the world, and also conducting workshops with local musicians. It has often been noted that the mark of this great artist is his continued production of notable works.

Kiddus I himself is a mysterious figure. His song "Graduation in Zion" was featured on the soundtrack to the 1978 film Rockers, but little has been heard of him since the early '80s until now. Kiddus I was a very prominent member of the 1978 peace movement in Jamaica, praising the efforts of "brother Claudie, brother Buckie, Tony" on record with "Security In The Streets" released on his Shepherd label. On a contemporary note, Kiddus released his full-length debut Kiddus I Inna de Yard, on the Makasound label in 2005. The song and riddim "Graduation in Zion" has also recently been remade by Spain based Lone Lion Productions. And this year a compilation of his Shepherd 45's have been remastered and released by Japan based Dub Store.

After 30 years in the business, music still comes naturally to Chinna, like breathing. He is
most well known for his work with the legendary Soul Syndicate band and can be heard
on almost 50% of the Grammy award winning reggae recordings. Recording with artists
like: Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, Ziggy Marley and the Melody
Makers, Mutabaruka, Freddie Mac Greggor, Michael Rose, Mighty Diamonds, BlackUhuru, Burning Spear, the Heptones and Sizzla just to name a few. Chinna’s name appears on the credits of well over 500 albums. But, it’s not just reggae where you’ll see his name, he’s recorded with artists of all genres, including: Lauren Hill, Eve, Erykah Badu and Joss Stone. He’s traveled all over the world but if you ask Chinna where his favorite place is, he’ll tell you that there’s no place he’d rather be than in Kingston, Jamaica at home, Inna de Yard.

Ryan Thomas aka Jahmali made a serious impact when Donovan Germain, producer of Penthouse fame, released the singer's superb debut album "El Shaddai". However, reggae connoisseurs had already discovered this natural talent, with one of the best voices in a while, through some fine recordings he did for King Jammy, Barry O'Hare and Bobby 'Digital' Dixon. It is hard to point out the standout tracks on his latest album - not only because every single song has its own merits, but also due to the fact that "Treasure Box" contains no weak song.

Three and half years later, he left the Military Band to pursue the music of; Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and other Jazz greats. He then began working as a studio musician for Sir Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One label. In 1964 Dizzy joined the Skatalites, where he joined fellow studio greats like; Tommy Mccook, Roland Alphonso, Lester Sterling and Don Drummond. Dizzy continues to perform around the world with many Jamaican Bands such as: Bunny Wailer, The Soul Vendors, Supersonics and also his own band The Jamaican All-Stars. Dizzy’s trumpet playing has had and continues to have a tremendous influence on Jamaican music, past, present and future.
He was diagnosed with cancer at the start of 2008. He was survived by his mother, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dizzy's 2-5-1

more -->

'Dizzy' was one of the founding members of ska pioneers The Skatalites, who paved the way for a generation of ska artists.

The legendary ensemble formed in 1963 and though they were initially only together for fourteen months, they inspired a generation of Jamaican musicians to create their own distinct genre of music.
Their energetic, largely instrumental numbers were developed from a blend of calypso and the R&B sounds being imported from America, an innovation usually attributed to Prince Buster. The Skatalites proved a hugely popular live act, replacing the sound system parties that had become fashionable on the island during the 1950s.
The ska explosion in Jamaica later developed into the rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall styles, while the music of The Skatalites and those who followed in their wake (such as the Maytals and the Ethiopians) later became a central soundtrack to the UK punk movement and was revived by bands like The Specials and Madness.
After the group split in 1965 Johnny Moore went on to a career as one of the most revered session musicians in Jamaica and played solos for the likes of Bob Marley and Lee 'Scratch' Perry.

He was born in Kingston on 5 August, 1938. He was inspired to take up music when he saw a neighbourhood boy playing the drums. He asked where the lad had learned to play and he was told the Alpha Boys School, an institution for wayward youths. Thus he was forced to deliberately get himself into trouble to gain admittance. "I had to pull a couple of pranks so that they figured I was going haywire," he explained.
Once there he showed great musical aptitude and joined the Jamaica Military Band after graduation, but was dismissed because he preferred the jazz of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie (from whom he took his nickname) to the regimental numbers.

His Rastafarian beliefs and countenance made it difficult to find work until he found refuge in saxophonist Tommy McCook's Skatalites.
In their short spell together the group recorded many classics of the era, such as Guns Of Navarone and Silver Dollar, and worked with the best musicians and producers of the age. Still rated as one of the most talented Jamaican bands of all time, the members of The Skatalites all went onto to successful careers but reformed in 1986 and have toured in various forms ever since. 'Dizzy' Moore only played with the reformed Skatalites for a short while and left due to a feud with McCook but continued to make occasional appearances in Jamaica in later life.

Dizzy was diagnosed with cancer at the start of 2008. He was survived by his mother, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
